Roman Mints informs us that Lidia Fikhtengoltz, last surviving Moscow student of the legendary Genrikh Neuhaus, reaches her century today. She gave her last concert nine years ago.

But the legend lives on in the playing.

UPDATE: Her grandson writes:
Today is a big event in our family – my grandmother Lydia Israelvna Fichtenholz turns 100. Exclamation marks swarming in my head. A hundred!!!
I have never called her grandma a day in my life – maybe because she is officially my cousin’s grandmother, not my own (my grandfather’s sister), but most likely because she doesn’t fit the typical grandmother’s image (by the way, she has no grandchildren). She is Lidusia for all our family members. In this diminishing-flattering form of her name as in a capsule all the traits of her character, as I see and feel them – tenderness, mischief, lightness and even some frivolity – and again tenderness.
Amazing pianist, a fragment of the old Russian piano school, because she was lucky with teachers (Bertha Reingbald in Odessa and Henrich Neigaus in Moscow). Awesome subtle musician who never knew about his uniqueness. First-class piano and chamber ensemble teacher. In private life – the kindest, naive person, whose own kindness and openness have been surprisingly carried away, intact and unharmed, despite the ugly soul of the Soviet system of world understanding, and general human cynicism and meanness…

On the day of her centenary as I write this, she is lying in her bed in a snowy Strogino, probably taking a nap, not realizing how excited we all are for this round date. Or not: she, a little mischievous girl, runs along the sunny Odessa street, runs home, her beloved brother Misha and her parents are alive and well, the ringing voice of her mother comes across the yard and calls for lunch, at dinner dad will ask what she learned today. Her life is beautiful and full of hope. She’s not a hundred, she’s ten, where did the extra zero come from.

Is her „grandson“ this gentleman who got kicked out of Zürich Opera because of sexual arrassement and misconduct?

    • Pianist says:

Theoretically speaking, it is quite possible that any of the commentators here owe back taxes and/or have outstanding traffic tickets. Alleging that they do, without proof, would be libelous.

By the same token, groundlessly accusing the author of the article about Lydia Fichtenholz of crimes the readers of this blog have never heard about (and couldn’t care less) is slanderous and mean.

      • Golda says:

        Thanks for reasonable comments.

      • Cameron Noyes says:

I agree. If that had something to do with this woman’s centenary there may be a shred of a point. As it sits here it’s just an ugly piece of random trash talk….
Thanks for letting that be the key comment at a moment where we, at least the non-misanthropes among us, would rather be celebrating a lifetime of accomplishment… tugeye

  • Telemachos says:

There is at least one other living student of Heinrich Neuhaus: Valerij Voskobojnikov. He was born in 1939 and currently lives in Rome (Italy).

  • Save the MET says:

Neuhaus passed in 1964. He was teaching up to the end. Are we sure there are not any pianists he taught in their 80’s and 90’s. He had a large stable of pupils at the end of his life. His son took many of them on late in his life and afterwards as well.

  • Robert Hairgrove says:

What a lovely testimonial … thanks for sharing this!

  • Nicola M says:

This is incorrect – Andrzej Esterhazy studied with Neuhaus in Moscow in the 1960s. Alive and well and in his 80s, he currently resides in West Hampstead.

  • Greta says:

Mr. Mints is incorrect. Nina Svetlanova is alive and well. There are many Neuhaus pupils still around.

  • Neil Yates says:

What a wonderful performance from both of them! Surprisingly (for me) I especially liked the arrangements of the two etudes by Scriabin. Have a most happy birthday, Lidia!

  • Julliard student says:

    Happy birthday sweetheart

  • Suzy O'SHEA-NATHANIEL says:

What a wonderful way to remember your great aunty Lydia
May she have more years to spread her joy in your family and the world. Blessings on Lydusia.
