One does not expect any German radio orchestra to be ahead of the curve, but WDR Sinfonieorchester definitely jumped the gun this morning by appointing Marie Jacquot as chief conductor from 2026.

Marie, 33, is Principal Guest Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and incoming chief of of the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen.

She’s going places and WDR got there (almost) first.

She will succeed Cristian Macelaru in Cologne.

  • Good choice says:

Congrats WDR! She has been one to watch for quite a while now. Seems a very good match – the orchestra’s profile and quality has also increased considerably in recent years, with outstanding young first chairs especially in the winds and brass. I tremendously enjoy the many performances on their WDR Klassik Youtube channel, in particular the Carmina and a very recent Mahler 2 with Maestro Macelaru. For me the second best German radio orchestra after the Bavarians.

    • Don Ciccio says:

Which begs the question: what happened to Macelaru and why wasn’t his contract renewed? He was also announced at the Met to lead Zauberflote (holiday version) but he was replaced.

      • Anon in Köln says:

Not a good match with the orchestra, and had already been renewed at least once, and ultimately disappointing tenure given the orchestra at his disposal

  • WU says:

Excellent choice – although she deserves even better!

  • May says:

Well, she does tick one of the boxes …

  • elcantor says:

    Bravo !

  • Henry williams says:

    Good taste in clothes

  • From the inside says:

Not a very impressive conductor, based on performances seen and heard. Raab-Böhm -machinery doing their thing here.
