Gaza activists disrupt opera in Oslo

There appears to have been a small demonstration demanding a ceasfire before the performance at Oslo Opera. (Verified fact: Hamas has refused to accept ceasefire proposals made by Egypt and Qatar).

What is alarming in Oslo is that a section of the audience applauded the poster claim that Israel is allegedly committing genocide. (Definition: Genocide is the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group.)

Watch.

Shall we wait for the ICJ’s judgement in this matter?

  • Lilas Pastia says:

No disruption. This is clearly before the start of the performance. As far as what is applauded, it could just as well be what is shouted: “La Gaza leve” (May Gaza live). Seeing the number of killed civilians in Gaza, this should not be a very controversial statement.

    • Bone says:

Difficult to discern civilians from participants in the terrorism. Prolly best to err on the side of caution.

    • Guest says:

It certainly would’ve disrupted my opera-going experience, even if were before the performance! If someone wants the war to stop, the sign should say, “Return the hostages immediately and stop terrorist organizations (Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis) from shooting rockets into Israel and hiding among civilians”. If that would happen, you’d be amazed how fast the war would stop. Kind of like Oct. 6, 2023. Otherwise, keep your ignorant politics out of our opera houses.

  • Dimitri Vassilakis says:

Is an opera house really the place for a political demonstration ? How about musicians disrupting , let’s say a football game or , better , a parliament session in order to claim their cause ?

    • guest says:

Hmmm. Not a bad idea, actually. In the USA, we could then watch the police billy clubbing a bunch of women tutti violinists.

    • Carl says:

I’d argue that an opera house an ideal place for a protest like this. Israel’s campaign is supported by many wealthy elites, including Jewish lobbying groups. And there are probably some oil plutocrats in Oslo who want to see Netanyahu and his cronies get their way. Bring it on!

  • Paul Joschak says:

How about a “Release all the hostages” protest….?

    • Kvasir says:

Yes, including the 7000 + Palestinian hostages being held in Israeli prisons in inhumane conditions, many held with no official charges having been made against them.

  • Yaron says:

If the Allies were required to protect the lives of German civilians, as Israel is required to protect the lives of civilians in Gaza – Norway would still be under Nazi rule.

  • Kvasir says:

This reaction is perfectly understandable. Norway was responsible for negotiating the Oslo Accords, and Israel has violated the terms of that agreement, as well as those of the Geneva Initiative.

Israel was supposed to have withdrawn completely from all Palestinian territories 20 yrs. ago. They are still there & in violation of both agreements they are creating illegal settlements. Norway joined the rest of the EU in requiring labels on all products originating in Israeli settlements in 2022. Norway gave Israel time to correct itself. They didn’t. Now Israel is on a genocidal rampage which exceeded “self-defense” weeks ago.

Face it, most of the world does not stand with Israel right now. Israel is behaving like a lawless bully. Norwegians have every right to demand a ceasefire. Norway stuck its neck out 20 years ago to intercede in this conflict. If Israel had followed the rules of the Oslo Accords, this war may not have even happened.

    • James says:

No actually, it was from territories, not all territories, snd thr Palestinians didn’t do their side. Oh, and let’s consider just what has happened since Israel withdrew from Gaza – as we type there are Israeli hostages being held in cages, we now know, and female hostages being raped again and again every day. How about a few protests on their behalf? Or are they simply too Jewish (most of them)?

      • guest says:

After a century of oppressing Palestinians, it ridiculous to claim Israel has acted in good faith.

      • Kvasir says:

Israel is a nation, not a religion, James, so please don’t play the anti-semitic card here. 26% of the Israeli population is not even Jewish.

From a synopsis of the Oslo Accords on Wikipedia. The entry gives references from the actual Oslo Accords if you want to fact check:

“A core issue of the Oslo Accords was the withdrawal of the Israeli military from Palestinian territories. The plan was a withdrawal in phases and a simultaneous transfer of responsibilities to the Palestinian authorities for maintaining security.”

It goes on to explain that those territories are Gaza & the West Bank. So why is Israel still occupying the West Bank in 2024? And please explain how illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank do not violate both the Oslo & the Geneva Accords.

Hostages? As we speak there are over 7000 Palestinians, many of them women & children, being held in Israeli prisons, many with no official charges made against them. That is a hostage situation of grave proportions, IMO. There are reports of young Palestinian boys having been beaten & tortured by Israeli guards there. Very little of this reaches western media, whereas we are getting a non-stop barrage of Israelis running to western media with absolutely everything. It’s over the top.

And yes, sadly, I’ve read reports of Palestinian women being raped by Israeli guards.

This is a tragic situation on both sides. But Israel is not blameless and the Norwegians know this better than anyone else. Israel has violated the agreement they helped negotiate. If there’s a disruption at Oslo’s opera, it’s very understandable.

  • logical thinker says:

“What is alarming in Oslo is that a section of the audience applauded the poster claim that Israel is allegedly committing genocide.” they are…

  • Paul Dawson says:

The general impression I’m getting from these comments is approval from the pro-Palestinians and disapproval from the pro-Israelis.

My take as a potential audience member is that I could tolerate protest from either side, as long as it did not disrupt the performance.

My take as a potential protester is that I wouldn’t waste time and effort on a protest which has not the slightest chance of causing any effect.

    • Guest says:

Seems like it’s usually the pro-Palestinian camp that’s pulling stunts like these. I guess it harasses the Jews and Israelis, and the rest of us have no chance of enjoying an evening of music without hearing (or becoming) the news. Goal accomplished?

  • william osborne says:

Interesting how about 15,000 Gazan women and children have been killed since the war began and yet there is no mention of that in this discussion.

  • soavemusica says:

Forgetting Hamas, was it a genocide to urge Ukraine to stop negotiating with Russia after the attack, before the young male population largely died?

    No?
