CHICAGO — The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Assocation announces A Notes for Peace Celebration concert, presented by the Negaunee Music Institute on Tuesday, March 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Symphony Center. The event celebrates NMI’s partnership with Purpose Over Pain and the impact of the Notes for Peace program, supporting families who have lost loved ones to gun violence in Chicago.

The concert, conducted by Kyle Dickson, will feature musicians from the Civic Orchestra of Chicago; musicians from the Irene Taylor Trust; vocalists Journey Allison, Leah Dexter, Meagan McNeal, Sarah Ponder, Sarah Vander Ploeg and Simbryt Wittington Dortch, as well as violinist and CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn.

Notes for Peace is a social impact initiative of the Negaunee Music Institute at the CSO that was launched in 2018 with artistic leadership from world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Through Notes for Peace, families who have lost loved ones to gun violence in Chicago are invited to compose, record and perform original songs of tribute that are also posted on notesforpeace.org and the CSOA’s social media accounts. To date, nearly 100 songs have been written over 13 Notes for Peace project sessions. The concert on March 19 will premiere the 100th song.

    Why not just ban guns?

    • Sisko24 says:

In Chicago? In the US where we have a Second Amendment to the Constitution which appears to guarantee a right to gun ownership? Really? How droll!

    • Jimmie says:

Any idea how you will entice criminals, gangbangers, thugs to turn in their currently illegal guns?

    • Ban guns country-wide says:

Guns are ensentially banned in Chicago. It’s Illinois’ neighboring states, particularly Indiana, that have very few restrictions on weapons. A 20-minute drive across the border is hardly a barrier for someone who wants to play shoot-em-up.

Hope they put a metal detector at the entrance of Symphony Center.

Snark aside, in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Paris, everyone went thru metal detectors, including the handheld wands, at the Philharmonie.

Surreal sight to see these grandes dames opening up their fur coats to be wanded.

Look much further sound to your border. Not to mention the fact that Yemen is sure to exact revenge on the USA by sending its operative through that same border. It’ll be as easy as falling off a log.

  • Anon says:

Headline would better read “CSO’s Civic Orchestra Plays for City’s Gun Victims”. Two different entities – pro CSO vs the CSO sponsored Civic training level orchestra. Clearly listed as a Civic Orchestra free event.

  • Confusing says:

Shouldn’t the headline say “Civic orchestra” plays…? According to your report, the CSO (meaning the the orchestra itself) has nothing to do with it, it’s a CSOA thing

  • drummerman says:

The late great jazz alto saxophonist Phil Woods once explained one of the many the virtues of music education: “If a kid is holding a musical instrument, he can’t be holding a gun.”

  • John says:

    GUN victims? GANG victims.

  • Snark shark says:

South side gangs have been real quiet since CSO dropped this.

  • Essardee says:

Has even one orchestra done any kind of concert or benefit for Israel? Not that I’ve heard of.
