Apple drives Spotify spitting mad

This is the start of a new blast from Spotify’s Daniel Ek against Apple, whom he claims are stealing his clothers. Since neither company compensates musicians properly we might stay neutral in this war, but should we?

For almost five years – 1,782 days – we have been asking the European Commission to take action against Apple. In a world that values competition and innovation, we found it unacceptable to stand by and allow gatekeepers like Apple to go unchecked.

So you can imagine our excitement when the Digital Markets Act (DMA) was created and passed into law to once and for all put an end to this unfair stifling of innovation disguised by Apple as security protections. We were proud of Europe for leading the way and assumed that Apple would have no choice but to comply with the letter and the spirit of the law.

But as Apple has just shown the world, they don’t think the rules apply to them.

Neither Apple or Spotify pay non-featured (orchestral) musicians ANYTHING WHATSOEVER.

And if they did, you’d say it’s nothing. And if they paid more you’d say they don’t get benefits. And if they did, you’d say they don’t get 3 month vacations to admire the beaches of vietnam while thinking about Webern or Bach.

“In the name of culture” it will never ever stop. This entire artform was conceived by leeching funds from the rich and the monarchy, so I guess the complaining, crying and always asking for more is…..historical praxis?

A very cynical take. If no worker ever complained about their renumeration then most people would be slaves and eating only enough food to stay viable for their overlords. And there is a concept called fairness “a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.” As costs of living go up then so should wages. But what we are seeing with Apple and Spotify is an appalling exploitation of musicians who are seemingly trapped in a system with no way out. If musicians continue to be reimbursed a pittance the result will be less musicians and a darker world.

I really hope steaming music reaches some kind of more mature second generation…it never happened in movies or books that “everything was free.” Now the creep is happening in steaming film and tv with more and more adverts and charging for different tiers. There’s no reason that can’t happen in music.
At least Apple is diversified and sells all sorts of products and services. Spotify is nothing but a music theft app.

    • Mecky Messer says:

If you cared about actually reading the news once in a while you’d realize the major investments from Spotify for the last 5 years have been audiobooks and podcasts…

But yeah, you keep on living in your alternative reality where people must obey your ivory tower tastes and purchase a product they don’t want at gunpoint, else they are declared “ignorant”.

  • Tamino says:

Spotify is a cancerous parasite to the business and deserves to die.
Now Apple is also no saint, but nobody compensates the creators of recordings worse and more extortionate than Spotify.
