At Yannick’s request, apparently.

Whatever, it’s wonderful.

  • Pianofortissimo says:

    Dear Mr Trifonov,
You don’t look good in that Rasputinian look. Do something about it.
    Your fan 🙂 Pff

  • Larry L Lash says:

I’ll stick with Bill Evans, thanks.

    • John Kelly says:

I love Bill Evans too but that’s like saying “you played an encore by Chopin but I prefer Schubert………..”.

  • Frank says:

Trifonov seems to be going full Glenn Gould, letting his appearance slide and odd mannerisms take over. It’s a shame because he’s not a bad looking kid, but this isn’t working for him. You’d think his wife would tell him to shave and clean up his act a bit.

  • Mr. Ron says:

I watched it on YouTube. Wonderful. DT obviously enjoyed playing it and Yannick loved it too.

  • Larry says:

Sensational! Do we know who transcribed the original Tatum recording?

  • Elizabeth Owen says:

Can’t see it here but you can find it on You Tube wonderful as always but what on earth has he done to himself? He looks awful. If men can make remarks about lovely Yuja than I can about Daniil!

  • Mr. Ron says:

For those interested in clothing, Yannick wore a black outfit that was entirely appropriate (no private parts showing).

If DT chooses to wear a beard and long hair and plays that well, who cares.

  • Robert Holmén says:

I didn’t know 1980 Mick Fleetwood could play the piano like that.

  • Richard Whiteman says:

    Trifinov falsified Art Tatum.
Aside from Tatum’s rubato into and coda, the piece should swing and have a strong time feel.
One aspect of Art Tatum’s art was his ability to play virtuoso runs and filigree within the “rules” of jazz performance practice.
Trifinov is a great pianist but he missed the mark here.

    • John Kelly says:

Agreed it doesn’t swing. Neither does Yuja’s Tea for two and Thibaudet’s Bill Evans disc isn’t….well Bill Evans… except in the notes. Still, I am glad these artists are offering this Tatum stuff because it may encourage some classical listeners to go on YT and hear the man Fats Waller called “God.”

  • Mr. Ron says:

It’s all very shameful and not serious at all.

Look at that conductor: he’s obviously gay (doesn’t he know anything about people like Handel and Bernstein?) and actually enjoying himself. No tux either, just a blousy cheap, black outfit. Dressed like a tart and acting like one too.

So too is the pianist. He too looks likes he’s enjoying what he’s doing, he should look like he’s sucking a very sour lemon or at the very least, eating prunes. Or at least act like he is in a religious temple. Plus, he’s definitely seedy with that beard, NO tie at all, and showing a paunch. That is all wrong. Not sexy and not to be taken seriously. If anything, classical music is serious stuff. And who does he think he is playing something jazzy? That’s for trash, not for serious classical music lovers. Next thing you know, he’ll have dirt under his fingernails and, heaven forbid, no manicure.
