    The Emperor has no clothes

  • IP says:

But you cannot see the loverboy. Or girl. Oh wait, they took the picture.

  • Tom M. says:

    Simply dreadful.

    • IP says:

Dreadful? Barely. He’s far better looking than Dr. Reiner. But barely appropriate.

(Now, I wonder what made me write “barely” twice in two lines.)

      • Essardee says:

If opera singers are expected to perform in the nude, why not conductors? That way there is more than one baton to follow…

  • Ich bin Ereignis says:

Does he actually think he can be taken seriously as a musician after indulging in such displays? Perhaps so by some clueless audiences — but certainly not by the musicians in the orchestras he conducts who undoubtedly are chuckling inside during rehearsals after learning about these pics.

Sadly, that probably doesn’t matter to him — although it should. Somebody in the marketing dept is probably suggesting to him this is actually a good idea. Either that, or he’s simply indulging in sheer hubris. The truly great conductors of our time (there are actually a few currently) would never, ever, even remotely contemplate selling themselves in such a cheap, self-demeaning manner.

    • Tamino says:

He is not connecting mentally to the traditional classical music audiences. (nor is he genuinely interested in that music apparently.) He wants his gratification as an influencer from different crowds. But he realizes he is making his money in the classical music biz. A bit tragic even. He identifies differently than what his function is.
He can’t leave the biz because of the easy money. He should meet different people, but probably too late. What a waste of talent.

  • David K. Nelson says:

You know, it’s only showboating if somebody reprints the photograph. And its even showboatier if they then crop it to get a better look.

I’m reminded of one of Eugene Ormandy’s favorite stories about his predecessor, Leopold Stokowski. It seems a Philadelphia dowager repeatedly called the police because Stokowski had the habit of sunbathing nude on his apartment terrace. The police arrived at the lady’s home and she told them Stokowski was out there right now so they could see for themselves. The cops looked out her window and told her they couldn’t see anything. “Well of course not,” she snapped. “You have to stand on this chair …..”

  • Margaret Koscielny says:

All this outrage against a conductor with a good-looking body, while, on the female side, Miss Y.W. exposes her less controversial parts at the piano for all to see. We do live in interesting times.
    Whatever brings in the audiences!

  • V.Lind says:

He’s outgoing from more than Dutch National Opera — he is leaving his other Netherlands posts too. No word yet, it seems, on where he is headed, but I suspect he has some offers or he would not be leaving all posts at once.

At his age, with his looks and that killer body, and an Instagram account, it would not surprise me in the least if he brought in some new audiences!

  • Robert Holmén says:

I thought he tweeted he wasn’t going to do this anymore.

Or was that a different Naked Conductor?

  • SueSonataForm says:

Gives new meaning to stick waver.

  • Piston1 says:

It’s just another version of the tacky narcissism of Yannick. On the surface, they portray themselves as these “liberating”, “populist”, “non-elitist” young conductors, when they’re really just a new generation of the same old thing: over-paid, over-engaged, over-rated, international star conductors, doing their part to ruin the world.

    • Oboist says:

Not quite in my opinion though. First, Yannick is authentic, while Viotti is doing a marketing show to distract from the gay rumours. Second, Yannick’s instagram is still mostly about music, while Viotti is doing one fashion post after the other, much more than Yannick.

  • SAM says:

Oh my! A naked musician!! The scandal!
