Report from the Government controlled China Daily:

Canadian violinist Chantal Juillet celebrated her 63rd birthday in Guangzhou, Guangdong province on Dec 19. Conductor Yu Long presented her with a birthday cake and the musicians of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra played an impromptu rendition of Happy Birthday to You for her.

On that day, the Chantal Juillet& Charles Dutoit Chamber Music Library was unveiled, with Juillet and her husband, Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit, attending the ceremony.

The library houses the scores of more than 3,000 chamber works by 230 composers from the 17th century to the present day, all donated by Chantal Juillet.

  • Guest Conductor says:

Good for them. A generous gift!

  • Affreux Jojo says:

Given how the Canadians treated him, the CBC not even crediting him anymore conducting while playing his recordings, good for the two of them!

    • Oliver says:

“The Canadians” did not do anything wrong, the CBC made a stupid decision; that is a fact. Another fact is that Dutoit harassed many people during his career and barely suffers from it at all.

      • Affreux Jojo says:

If I had written Canadians, it would have meant all of them. The Canadians meant the art establishment and media associated.
He may have not been a saint but the CBC move was petty, considering how they kept abusing programming his recordings for years.

    • Guy says:

NPR won’t mention Dutoit’s name when playing his recordings either. It’s ridiculous.

    • Willym says:

Strangely Radio Canada – the French network – does credit him. A few years ago when I asked CBC about their decision I was told it was so it would not “trigger memories” of musicians who had been abused by Dutroit. When I asked what serious musician or music lover listened to their classical programming these days they did not reply.

  • IP says:

Good decision. You know, the enemy from outside only wants to replace us while the enemy from within will only be happy with obliterating us. So the music will be kept in a safe place.

  • Nate W says:

Guess what happens to that music library if Xi Jinping suddenly deems it “subversive Western propaganda”? (Oh wait, communists don’t do that sort of thing)

  • Jobim75 says:

Well, somehow, future or maybe just survival of classical music will take place in Asia. It’s not much dynamic anywhere else. Except Dutoit of course who has never been as dynamic and younger with no white hair at all…..

  • Larry W says:

A well placed contribution. Chinese classical musicians were taught solo repertoire almost exclusively. While producing many exceptional instrumentalists, chamber music lagged behind. This will contribute to a richer musical education.

  • Chupie says:

    Sounds like a peace maker
If everyone could understand this amazing gesture

  • Rosco says:

Unfortunately, A less than acceptable human being. A formidable conductor.
