Statement from the Malta Philharmonic:

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra took note of the outcome of the criminal prosecution against its Principal Conductor Maestro Sergey Smbatyan by the Armenian prosecutor-general, which acquitted Mro Smbatyan of all charges. Mro Smbatyan was suspended from performing his duties at the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra upon his arrest in Armenia on alleged fraud charges until the relevant facts and circumstances could be ascertained, pending said prosecution. In view of the new developments, the MPO has withdrawn the suspension and would be reinstating the Maestro to his former position.

  • Jennifer Micalled says:

Very disappointing news! This Orchestra has some wonderful hard -working musicians. Unfortunately, the Orchestra has political pressures and is run by whichever party is in power! What a pity!
Politics and art should not be mixed. It’s a very dangerous cocktail

    • Brian says:

A person has been acquitted of criminal charges and given his life back and you are disappointed? What is wrong with you?

      • Harold W. says:

One may be happy that Armenian justice functions in an impeccable, fair, transparent and most efficient way, without necessarily being happy that Smbatyan is chief conductor of the Malta orchestra (or of any other orchestra for that matter).
