This is an astonishingly sombre announcement by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister.

Gergiev and the outgoing Urin look in opposite directions, joined in mutual loathing.

Gergiev has grown a full beard for the new job.

Gergiev actually put on a tie ?!?

Looking all his 70 years. That kind of beard is very ageing.

He has made Mariinsky into a provincial level company with primitive boring productions and lousy singing, now it is Bolshoi ‘s turn

I lived in Russia as a Westerner for several years and frequently attended performances at the Mariinsky. Gergiev’s political views may be questionable – but the transformation of the Mariinsky is not. Productions and concerts equal to any in the West without a doubt. A very fine orchestra.

I never saw them in St. Petersburg but in Moscow in the early 2000s I saw them do Tristan and Die Walkure, and the orchestra do Mahler 2 and Shostakovich 10. In other countries I’ve seen them do Mahler 5 and other works. They are (or at least were) fantastic. But I have definitely canceled Gergiev over Ukraine (and Georgia).

By the way, did you know it was actually Georgia, which attacked in 2008, not Russia? After Russian provocation, of course.

Would you say NATO did Georgia and Ukraine a favour in declaring they were to become members? What year? 2008…
