The Sussex opera festival has appointed a new chief conductor for what used to be the Glyndebourne Tour Orchestra until the Arts Council abolished its tour funding.

The orchestra is now known as the Glyndebourne Sinfonia. Its principal conductor will be Adam Hickox, 27, son of the late conductor Richard Hickox and the late contralto Pamela Helen Stephen.

  • Coincidence? I think not says:

When you’re a student of Sian Edwards, you can get anything … (e.g. Donatella Flick, most UK-based conducting gigs / competitions)

    • Come on now... says:

Because Sian is an excellent teacher is what you mean, I’m sure.

Can we stop trying to undermine young talent on this website? It’s really ugly and petty.

      • Musician says:

How stupid are you? Your idiocy and ignorance do not excuse the rampant nepotism and political underpinnings of the profession

  • Kay Warbrick says:

I am sure Hickox jnr will be very good but surely, just for once, Glyndebourne could have managed to appoint a woman. Their leading roles – conductors, directors etc are still so heavily male dominated.

  • Jenny Prestana says:

    Congratulations ❤️

  • Ex Glyndebourne says:

Dr Jane Glover was Musical Director of Glyndebourne Touring Opera from 1982 -1985. That was way ahead of the current trend to appoint for the sake of gender. Talent is the only thing that should matter.

well done, always enjoyed working with your father. ACE, a ‘secret ballot’ vote of no confidence would be a useful gauge of what most of us think about their preening antics

    • MWnyc says:

What good would that do? The only ballot that will make any difference for ACE is the one you’ll cast for Member of Parliament at the next general election.

  • Make a joyful noise!! says:

I knew his parents. They were absolutely splendid people. I can only imagine how proud they would have been of their son. Congratulations Adam! I wish I could tell in person how much your mother and father meant to me.
