The controversial Italian tenor has pulled out of the title role in Opera de Monte Carlo’s Don Carlo ‘for personal reasons’.

His replacement is Sergey Skorokhodov.

When does the personal become unprofessional?

When it gets you banned from the Royal Opera House, for one.

  • Dennis says:

He would be hard pressed for comprimario roles in the 40s-50s! To see him in the house must be torture

  • Ms.Melody says:

His personal reason is the fact that he does not have the voice for don Carlo. he was abysmal in la Boheme with Netrebko, they both were. So, for once, he did something good for himself, for opera and for the paying public.

  • Novagerio says:

When you realise that the role is too demanding and you’re “only” a Nemorino – at best…

  • Musicman says:

In addition to his sexual misconduct, his voice is way way WAY to small to sing the role Don Carlos!

  • Peter Schünemann says:

I am glad (and astonished), that nobody mentions, that Grigolo’s replacement Sergey Skorokhodov is (like Ildar Abdrazakov) member of the Mariinsky Theatre. That’s only fair : Furlanetto sings Filippo at the Mariinsky, Skorokhodov in Monte Carlo. Is the world of Opera becoming “normal” again?

  • Micaela Bonetti says:

When does the choice of a photo become unprofessional and not adequate, Mr Lebrecht?
