The Opéra de Monte-Carlo has removed Ildar Abdrazakov, a noted Kremlin supporter, from Verdi’s Requiem tomorrow.

The company says: ‘ We would like to inform you that due to illness Ildar Abdrazakov will be replaced by Erwin Schrott for the Messa da Requiem concert this Thursday, November 2”

Ildar, however, was unaware of his illness. Two hours later he posted this on his Insta account:

He has spent the year being cancelled. If Monte Carlo is only now cancelling his performances of the Verdi Requiem, they may find themselves on the wrong side of a lawsuit. If, however, his “illness” is similar to the “family reasons” that got him to do the cancelling last summer while he sloped off to Moscow for a higher fee, looks like everyone is happy.

Interesting that someone has remembered there is still a war raging in Ukraine. Aside from The Guardian it seems to have got pretty short shrift lately.

  • The Revolving Door says:

Did La Bartoli pull the plug?

Don’t be concerned. Netrebko’s “Baby Daddy” is a great artist.

  • Roland says:

    Good decision, dilettantish communication!
Why didn’t Monte Carlo just tell straight from the heart ‚we don’t want a supporter of the terrorist Vladimir Putin singing out stage‘? With all the consequences, may they be good (getting honour for having guts) or bad (financially)? Why those stupid and false excuses / deals?

    • dr. Maria says:

LIE, DEFAMATION ! Abdrazakov never politicized and never supported the aggressor. By the way, he is not Russian, but Bashkir. And one of the greatest singers in the world.

  • Wahlberliner says:

What’s the contradiction here? The instagram post talks about him appearing in Monte Carlo later in the month, says nothing about the Verdi Requiem. For all you know, he might well be indisposed at present. Still, if gets you the clicks, journalistic accuracy be damned.

  • Zelda Macnamara says:

How fortuitous to have Erwin Schrott available.

  • MD says:

As Karl Marx famously said, when history repeats itself, the first time it does it as tragedy, the second as farce. In the case of the revival of McCarthyism pursued by Slippedisc, the farcical level is so high that it definitely deserve accolades on par with the best MelBrooksism. In this new installment we are told the story of the sleepy boss of a Monte Carlo theater who, the day before a big performance, suddenly makes an unexpected, deeply unsettling discovery. Which discovery? Slippedisc is stingy on details, so we can only speculate. Did he suddenly discover that Abdrazakov was Russian when his passport accidentally fell on the floor? Or were his suspicions raised after a ritual toast, when the singer sent his empty glass flying to crash behind his shoulders? Or was it maybe some local news station that, having caught wind that Russia had invaded Ukraine in February 2022, broke the news in Monte Carlo on that day? Talking about bad timing for the poor theater boss. One can only imaging his anxiety level when he realized that his name would likely end up in the online forum ran by that guy who has never seen a Russian that wasn’t a Putin lover who ought to be banned by any civilized institution. That realization must have been so stressful that it’s hard to fault him for believing that any evidence substantiating those insinuations had been provided. SlippeDisc does not reveal how he arrived at the decision to sack Abdrazakov, but it is easy to imagine that when the destraught guy tried to reach Verdi to ask his opinion, learning of his death must have been the classic straw that broke the camel’s back, convincing him that it was a doomed day and he had no choice. So the theater boss sacked the Russian bass with the official excuse he was sick. An excuse that did not fool SlippeDisc, which brilliantly produced the indisputable proof to unmask the whole imbroglio: an empty post from Abdrazakov Instagram which did not contain even a single word to confirm he was actually sick nor even a single word to deny his support for Putin. Elementary, my dear Watson!

  • Peter Schünemann says:

I miss SD’s bashing of European singers, who still appear at the Mariinsky Theatre. For 20th of November there is a Don Carlo performance announced, featuring famous Italian basso FERRUCCIO FURLANETTO. Will SD now accuse him of supporting Putin?

  • Tiger says:

Well, he is still listed for Filippo II so, unless that changes, he has hardly been “dumped”. I wouldn’t mind if he was – but currently he is not.

  • Helmut Fischer says:

Very unfortunate that slipped disc is spreading fake news by jumping to (understandable but false) conclusions.

Ildar Abdrazakov is definitely unwell and the Opéra de Monte Carlo most certainly did not cancel him.

As someone pointed out already, the Instagram account is NOT Mr Abdrazakov’s personal one, but that of the Abdrazakov foundation.

    • Simpson says:

It is his foundation where his wife is the president and he is the artistic director. It is as his foundation as it gets. To think otherwise means to have no clue about how things work there.

  • Dixie says:

Just so we are all on the same page, here is a translation of the announcement from the Ildar Abdrazakov Foundation:

Well, friends, autumn is nearing its end – November has arrived For Ildar Abdrazakov, it will pass under the sign of Verdi… and it will not be so cold 🙂
