We have received reports from South Korea that Julian Kovatchev, music director of the Daegu Symphony Orchestra since 2014, died there very suddenly on November 12. He was 63.

Kovatchev, a Bulgarian who conducted extensively in Europe and occasionally in the US, had a heart attack a decade ago at the Arena di Verona.

Our condolences to his family.

He had a heart attack while conducting in Daegu. A doctor in the audience came to help. That was a while ago. How I wish he had more time there… I love the sound of Daegu Symphony under his baton. RIP
