The cellist Amit Peled got permission on a Southwest Airlines flight to play his national anthem ‘for the safety of all the people in Israel.’

UODATE: And another tribute from the famed German horn professor Jörg Bruckner:

Comments

  • Elisabeth Fischer says:

The things you do for 30 seconds of fame.

  • Alfred Terra says:

Small gestures of kindness and hope – including the gesture by Mr Lebrecht to publish – in a sea of antisemitic vitriol. Some cultures support music and the higher aspirations of mankind. All the while, in London, thousands march in support of the Islamic jihad. Watch out Europe. You might son find yourself eating the dish you allow others to cook.

  • Simon Scott says:

    Quite right too!

  • Ronald Cavaye says:

What about the safety of the people of Palestine?

    • Simon Scott says:

      Where is Palestine?????

    • Violist says:

Did you hear what the people of palestine did on October 7? Or have you been on another planet that day? And not, it’s not mistake- people of Palestine with the hamas-isis terrorists…together…

      • alexy says:

I heard what the terrorists of the Hamas did, which is beyond understanding and cannot be justified. But Hamas is not the people of Palestine, (likewise Jewish Power Party is not all Israeli for example). Israel has the right to erase Hamas and protect himself from people who lost their humanity, but should know better from their own history than treating a all population as Untermensch

        • Violist says:

How can I discuss with you, when you just refuse to learn facts. You refuse to see what the Gaza children learn in their schools, what terrorists dad and mom answer their son when he inform them with excitement that he recently killed 10 jews and setra…you also refuse to understand the tactic which hamas is managing to defend itself from IDF and that in these conditions Israel still try to minimize the civilian victims…what sense to discuss it with you when you and all of your kind love the jews only as victims and hate us when we want to fight.
You’ll understand very soon on your own skin what we fight against, but will be to late unfortunately…

      • Max Raimi says:

“The people of Palestine” didn’t perpetrate the atrocities of Oct. 7 en masse, any more than I as an American personally murdered the Vietnamese peasants at My Lai or the Lakota at Wounded Knee. Hamas did. Hamas last won an election in Gaza in 2006, before nearly half the current population was born. Recent polls put their approval in Gaza well south of 50%, although the current assault may have shored up their support to some extent.
Innocent people are dying miserably in Gaza, including women, the elderly, and children. It is possible to be both a victim and a perpetrator–on both sides. That so many of the commenters on this thread have so little interest in the suffering in Gaza, unable to recognize the humanity of the innocent who are starving and dying there, is as characteristic as it is horrifying.

        • Violist says:

There is so much cynicism in your mercy. The people like you are not at all interested in Palestinian children when terrorist infrastructure and launchers are built under their schools, when from the age of 6 they are taught to kill Jews, hate and blame everyone around them for their misfortunes… everyone except Hamas. While 30 Israeli children are sitting in cages being held captive by terrorists, you are still only talking about Palestinian children who are dying only because Israeli children are being shot at from behind their backs. And if you are an intelligent and educated person, then I have only one explanation for your words…

          • Igor says:

I have the same explanation as well. People like them make the best case for the necessity of the State of Israel.

  • Laurie says:

Both wonderful, Norman, thank you. Loved the growling bass line in the horns.

  • Daniel Reiss says:

So nice to hear Amit Peled again! How did he smuggle his cello into the passenger section? LOL
