The city of Leipzig has renewed its contract with the Gewandhaus director Andreas Schulz until 2028.

Schulz, 62, has been in the job since 1998, making him one of the world’s longest serving orchestra chiefs.

He has just announced another joint venture with the Boston Symphony OPrchestra – the complete Shostakovich symphonies with their shared music director Andris Nelsons.

  • Concertgebouw79 says:

On the photo the Gewandhaus concert hall so ugly from outside and so fantastic inside. the best thing and maybe the only one DDR built.

    • Tamino says:

DDR built a few more halls, e.g. Dresden Kulturpalast (which was as bad as Munich Gasteig acoustically, but now much better after a complete rebuild inside), and Konzerthaus (afka Schauspielhaus) Berlin, which is an almost 1:1 copy of Vienna Musikverein inside. (the exterior is from the 19th century, but the inside a completely new concept from the 1980s, albeit based on historical models and decorated in historical style.)

But Gewandhaus sticks out as an acoustical marvel. In memoriam Kurt Masur, who put all his influence and connections behind it.

  • Tony Sanderson says:

Nelson has just completed his Shostakovich symphony cycle with the BSO on DG. Similarly he has completed his Bruckner cycle on DG with the Leipzig Gewandhaus
