  • Sanity says:

So glad she won’t be singing this. She shouldn’t be attempting the role. She is one of the world’s best Verdi sopranos and she needs to look after herself.

I hope she feels better soon!

    • Ragnar Danneskjoeld says:

She already had trouble during her run in Zurich (though not as bad as Beczala) which has a house much smaller than Paris…

    • Ernest says:

I agree. I hope that wiser counsel will prevail and a replacement be named for her Turandot in the Royal Opera Tour to Japan.

      • Sanity says:

This is what happens when you don’t realise the difference between a Verdi soprano (a mezzo-soprano with an extended top) and a lirico-spinto (a true soprano with oomph). She shouldn’t be anywhere near spinto repertoire.

  • Manu says:

Oper is really so decadent. Sad to observe this constant decline.
Who on earth has the idea to cast this singer for this role, anyhow? These same people sit in contests as jury members as “experts”…

    • Tiredofitall says:

Remembering conversations with Ms. Ravanovsky in the early 00’s, she is no fool and in her early 30s fended off offers of too-big roles, too soon. She was well aware of how she wanted her career to develop.

Most people would not have cast Sondra as the Donizetti Queens, but she has dined out on that decision for several years. She continues to explore repertoire she obviously feels she can conquer.

Decline? How many sopranos of Sondra’s age (54) are still adding new roles at the world’s most important opera houses?

  • GCMP says:

Let’s hope Tamara Wilson gets good costumes. Her last two appearances at Lyric Opera of Chicago had ghastly clothing. She deserves better.

  • operacentric says:

Three replacements? Was she really singing 13 performances in one month, including a couple of consectuive nights?

  • MaestroGKC says:

OK, everyone, calm down. Tamara was already scheduled for 6 shows and now she’ll sing 7 (premiere). Anna P is singing two instead of the already scheduled one and only Irene is a replacement for the other 4 originally for Sondra. BTW, Irene was in the original mounting of this production in Madrid with me. We’re all fine and it’s gonna be amazing!
