From Musik-Heute:

The Cottbus State Theater is adding a solidarity concert for Israel to its program at short notice. Jewish and non-Jewish musicians are playing together “to break the silence that is spreading in the face of Hamas’ terror and its consequences,” the house announced on Friday. The event on October 31st will be dedicated to the people “in Israel and around the world, wherever they encounter hatred and anti-Semitism.”…

“The barbaric, unimaginable terror against Israel, which is supposed to be directed against all Jews, also has roots in the middle of Germany,” said artistic director Stephan Märki a few days ago. “In the middle of German cities, the bloodlust, the hatred of people, the contempt for civilization are celebrated.” Many remained silent, shrugged their shoulders coldly or found Israel itself to be guilty again. “Anyone who does something like that can’t want anything good. Anyone who doesn’t say anything against it is joining forces with evil. Why is so difficult to understand, how quickly “It wins? Only evil comes on its own. We have to want the good,” said Märki.

Do people really expect opera houses to take sides in every global conflict that erupts? Is there a concert supporting the Azerbaijani offensive in Nagorno-Karab? Or the sides in the Civil War in Ethiopia? How about the ongoing fight in Sudan?

Especially odd that the artistic director here is speaking so forcefully for Israel’s side. Does he have a background in international diplomacy that we should know about?

When Ethiopia gets a symphony orchestra or opera company we’ll discuss this.

When it comes to violence against a Jewish target, and silence or victim-blaming being a response, Germany has a rather tortured history. This man appears to remember that — or at least that is what I infer from this rather poor translation.

      • CascadeCrimson says:

Yes. And precisely why that ‘tortured history’ should be remembered toward all of humanity..for that will be a sure sign that Germany got over its tortured history. Dismissing the plight of the Palestines..removing the civilians..the women and children and elderly and sick..from the this ‘association’ with theHamas will help. Nobody hated on Irish people because of the militant actions of the IRA. So why does the West insist on holding these victims to ransom? Aren’t innocent dead Palestinians ..many killed by Israeli ‘soldiers’ not worth compassion? This concert is ok to stand in solidarity for Israel but the contemptuous and racist speechifying…the speaker appears to have not been freed from what he says is Germany’s past. He does not speak for Germany. Rather his own actions.. His hatred of another race in a conflict he has no inkling off is the issue here. Not Germany’s past…his hate.

    • Tancredi says:

Israel was invaded The subsequent anti-semitism expressed supports such aggression.

      • CascadeCrimson says:

Your comment reflects a closed mind. That there is the problem. Nothing can be yielded from dogmatic notions. Nothing. And in such a setting..hate prevails.

  • Ezekiel says:

How to say you are ignorant of the hoals of the pro Palestine protests without saying. Nobody is cheering the crimes against isreal, they’re simply saying evil doesn’t justify evil . Simply put ignoring isreals very real crimes is how evil wins here

  • Anthony Sayer says:

Good for them. This wouldn’t even have been an issue forty years ago; it’s only because the West has imported this, er, ‘new’ population that the idea of a country protecting itself against terrorism is considered dubious. Shame on our politicians for foisting this situation upon us.
