Police were called to break up a fight that broke up during a BalletWest performance of Dracula last night in Salt Lake City.

The altercation lasted at least five minutes before the blood cooled.

An orchestral musician writes: ‘I was playing in the orchestra. The dancers on stage could not hear us over the shouting. Our source stating that it was anger over the cross was from one of the dancers.’

Well, at least they can now legitimately claim that they’ve made their art form relevant to contemporary audiences.

  • V.Lind says:

Do you have any actual information about this, such as why there was a fight, who was involved (audience, artists, whoever) — this “item,” unsourced, is a little short of — you know, content.

Here is the info on the so-called “incident”. Remind me of americans in audience at classical music performances. There are always some man or lady who would speak throughout the whole performance. The most they get is “shhh” from audience member but as soon as “we are polite and equal” it could last just the whole symphony. Get used to it when traveling to US

      • V.Lind says:

Thanks. Still a bit skimpy — not worth the time of a Trib reporter?

        • Andrew says:

Not skimpy in the slightest. I’ve just forwarded it to some other UK websites. This stuff needs to be shared. Let’s burst the bubble here and get the truth out

      • J Barcelo says:

Yes there are terrible audience members in the USA and I’ve had to put up with my share. But…there are also terrible audience members, very selfish oafs world-wide. An insufferable know-it-all who did a running critique of an Ives symphony at the London Proms. Or the jerk in Vienna who decided to take a call on his phone at the Volksoper. The worst by far: Shenyang, China where the audience just chatted away throughout the whole concert.

      • NYMike says:

Distressing to learn that it was a NY couple causing all the ruckus.

    • Andrew says:

I can quite believe it. I speak as a concert artist. It doesn’t surprise me at all. I know Norman always checks his sources

    • OrchestraEnjoyer says:

The photo was pulled from a facebook post – I know because I saw it on my facebook feed the night before seeing it here on SlippedDisc.

  • Joel stein says:

There are more details on this on “Reddit”

And the guy should have gotten an usher to do the deed, not get all vigilante. He was the worse disruptor of the two. This would never happen in Manhattan with their union roller-derby female ushers.

  • A Pianist says:

This is such a shame. Ballet West is a world class ballet and Salt Lake City is so lucky to have it. Although I think for an American city of its size, it is quite a good city for the arts. Especially when ticket prices and family budgets are factored in.

The audiences can indeed be a bit odd. Every symphony concert I have attended, someone drops something heavy on the floor. It’s only a question of when. On the other hand the audience went bananas for Erki-Sven Tuur’s flute concerto showing they’re pretty open minded.

    This is tutu funny.

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

Are you sure this wasn’t the Marx Brothers’ “A Night at the Opera”?

  • Sign o' the times says:

    Who let Lauren Boebert in?

  • Zarathusa says:

That’s nothing! Last year I went to a boxing match and a ballet broke out!!! (LOL)

  • VeronicaW says:

There’s nothing like a good ballet brawl!

A Sad Sad future for the E.W Divan Orchestra in a time of Tragedy ?

If D.B is well enough might one get his Opiinion.

  • IP says:

It reads very well until the blood cooling but I could not understand what the dancer was doing and where the cross came in

    Mormon outrage.
