Berlin replaces Dutchman with Latvian

The star German baritone Michael Volle has pulled out late from Deutsche Oper’s Flying Dutchman due to poor health.

His replacement is the Latvian Egils Siliņš.

    Why is the nationality of a performer so important in the classical music world. Does it really matter what Citizenship a performer holds?

      I used to only see this country identification thing in the British and Canadian arts publications. Now, it has spread, it seems to other countries as well. I don’t see it too much in Germany or France but it is definitely a thing in the English speaking countries…not sure why it is important at all.

      Because it reminds us, happily, that we are not (yet) the United States of Europe and that mentioning nationality also enables us to perceive different sensibilities in different artists’ approaches.
