Perfect timing?

Comments

  • Jenny Berenson says:

I just had to do a double-take as I could have sworn I had this box set already! I believe it was released back in April to coincide with his 80th Birthday 🙂

  • opilec says:

Er, not really: it’s been out since April!

  • charlotte halton says:

Perhaps one could describe JEG’s contribution to musical life as “striking”?

  • Tony Sanderson says:

DG have also released a bumper box of JEG. I wonder how they compare at the weigh-in.

  • Anthony Sayer says:

I thought that said ‘Wandsworth releases John Eliot Gardiner’.

  • Tom M. says:

Is there an “outtake” disc of JEG screaming at subordinates (like those from the RCA engineers who kept the mikes open at Toscanini rehearsals)?

  • Dave says:

    Knockout!

  • Zarathusa says:

Does this newly released boxed set come complete with a DVD of all of Sir John’s “knockouts”?

  • Simono says:

I’ll hold out until the AVO edition

  • Edward Rushton says:

Maybe they know there won’t be any more.

  • yay! says:

‘jeg’ (pronounced ‘yay’) in Norwegian means ‘I’

  • Derek Trotter says:

An old-fashioned gaol “Mugshot” for the cover surely?

  • Alasdair Munro says:

For a moment I read ‘Warner’ as ‘Wandsworth’, which would not have been altogether surprising in the light of recent events.

  • David Pickles says:

    Money grabbing.

  • People are so sensitive now says:

The recordings speak for themselves, he apologized and made no excuses. Let’s move on.

  • IP says:

Nice to read opinions from a discerning musical audience.

  • Novagerio says:

    A Punchy Legacy…

  • Marvin says:

Ha, probably is literally complete at this point.

  • Sam McElroy says:

    Greatest hits…?

  • Doug says:

That’s his entire legacy right there: the recordings. When he’s gone, Monteverdi Choir and orchestras will cease to exist. One positive side of the recordings—you can’t see or hear him acting as an infantile egotistical bully as you could in real life.

  • Gustavo says:

So the whole thing may be a delayed April fools prank:

JEG never slapped and punched anybody, while his CD box hit the market in September 2023.

  • salminen says:

It was published last spring in france… the timing was perfect at that time …

  • Antwerp Smerle says:

As I write, 13 of the 26 comments here are feeble jokes. What happened after “Les Troyens” ( and on previous occasions) is sad, shocking and not funny. Perhaps we could try to understand why and how these situations arise, in the hope that we can reduce the chances that they will recur.

    • Gustavo says:

Oh come on, physical aggression is generally very rare in civilized, cultured societies.

JEG’s misbehaviour is an absolute exception – hence all the fuss.

The situation will only improve if the aggressor withdraws and/or is removed.

    • Anthony Sayer says:

Nobody died. They didn’t even get hurt. Stop snivelling.
