The inscription reads: “For shameful treatment of Russian artists – a response above and beyond anything imaginable by a rational person – and for supporting the needless dragging down of the United States on the 50th anniversary of its disengagement from the Viet Nam War”.

  • Sixtus Beckmesser says:

Would this have something to do with Anna Netrebko?

  • Tiredofitall says:

Not to diminish this honor for Mr. Gelb, but why acknowledge his contributions (actually, that of the organization, the Metropolitan Opera) and not to his wife, Keri-Lynn Wilson, founder and conductor of the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra?

  • Anon says:

Zelensky wants more money from the US. He’s trying to achieve that by kissing up to people in the US. And it’s a glorified way of saying thank you to encourage more support.

I wish he’d stop harping on the US. He’s like a whiny child who’s never satisfied. We’ve been very generous. He seems to think US taxpayers have bottomless pockets.

Let him take his dog and pony show and “Order of Merit” awards to a few other countries for a change.

  • Anthony Sayer says:

After Peter Gelb they just have to posthumously honour Eugene Ormandy and they’ve covered the flag.

    Which he certainly deserves.

  • Music fan says:

Gelb’s award may be tied to the fact that he was Vladimir Horowitz’s manager during the last decade or so of his career. Horowitz grew up in Kyiv.

Order of Merit THIRD Grade. Hmmm that is about right

  • Nicholas says:

Zelensky, Trudeau, and The Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons recently paid their respects to a member of the 14th Volunteer Division “Galicia” of the SS Troops which committed atrocities against Jews, Poles, and Russians. Mr. Gelb, meet Mr. Yaroslav Hunka. There’s no disinfectant strong enough to remove the stench of Banderism and Russophobia at the Met. How decadent it has become.

  • Save the MET says:

Gelb never earned his French Chevalier order, however, he did earn this award. So for a guy who I think has done more to damage the opera artform than anyone in the last 30 years, I do applaud his stand on the Ukraine.
