Major award for Berlin conductor
NewsThe conductor Joana Mallwitz, artistic director of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The federal citation states that Mallwitz, 37, stands for ‘the future of classical music with its universal, people-unifying language’.
Timing is everything in politics, as in music.
The award is being made on the day that, across Berlin, a handover is being arranged between musical dinosaurs.

A truly great, inspirational conductor. Good for her.
With all due respect, what has this woman done to deserve this award? What has she achieved?Life-changing music making? Any transcendental recordings?
A quick look at the website for the award reveals that a couple of dozen recipients are named every month. There are a large number of thousands of honorees — a physics prof and an elementary school headmistress in the latest list, in addition to Mallwitz. It’s a pleasant recognition for community involvement. It’s not the Nobel Peace Prize.
“stands for the future of classical music with her embarrassingly childish mimics” would have been more appropriate.
Spot on.
