France mourns dramatic soprano, 96
RIPDiapason reports the death of Suzanne Sarroca, a dominant figure at the Opéra over four decades.
Starting out as a mezzo, singing Carmen and Charlotte, she became Tosca in 1951 and remained a soprano for quarter of a century before reverting back to mezzo.
She sang mostly in France, Belgium and Switzerland, with two spells at Covent Garden, in 1958-59 and 1964–65.
And Salzburg.
Suzanne Sarocca was loved by her public and well respected by her colleagues. A great Tosca , Aida and many roles besides. There is a complete live performance with her as Balkis in La Reine de Saba which is well worth hearing. A long life well lived.
I don’t care about Tosca, but I’d like to hear La reine de Saba.
I am just learning about the French sopranos. They seem more melodic and Dessay and Petibon are great actors. This is another.
