Contrary to earlier reports, the Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov was not removed from Boris Godunov as a result of his Ukraine war support, or in cosequence of anti-Putin protests.

A source familiar with the singer tells us that he withdrew from the production on June 26, a day before the start of rehearsals, causing much consternation until a substitute could be found.

Abdrazakov has arranged to sing concerts in Moscow this week, for a higher fee.

  • Robert Holmén says:

He sounds a lot like, “You’re not breaking up with me, I’m breaking up with you!”

But once again, I find myself wondering about the contracts these artists have.

He quit one day before the job started… and there is no consequence to that?

What are his future employment prospects outside of Russia now that he has signaled he will ditch a job on one day’s notice if something better comes along?

    • Dmitri says:

This comment is kind of silly. It’s a surprise that his career hasn’t already been destroyed outside of Russia by the Weak Woke.

If this article is true, then it isn’t very professional to cancel last minute for a better gig, but this should serve as a warning: Russia has a well-funded, flourishing classical music scene, and top Russian musicians do not need to navigate Russophobia and threats in order to make a living and great art.

      • David says:

If you think things are flourishing for anyone but the 1% of classical musicians, you’re deluded. But then again, claiming that the success of the 1% is evidence of a flourishing country would be the most Russian thing ever, so…carry on.

  • Tom Phillips says:

They should be honored. He deserves a career nowhere other than his home country – in another time he would have been an excellent candidate for a Stalin prize.

    • Novagerio says:

Tom Philips: Yeah, just like former snitching rats like Atlantow, Arkhipowa, and especially Obratszowa and Nesterenko…

  • Tiredofitall says:

One day before rehearsals? I honestly don’t know which turn of events was worse. Clearly, Mr. Abdrazakov has no morals nor professionalism. His world is shrinking and fast.

  • Roland says:

Ha, ha, ha. What a ridiculous excuse! If it would be true, no concert hall would ask him any more because they would have to fear he would cancel for similar reasons. Additionally he would have to pay a fine to Munich which is surely higher than the money he would receive for a concert in Moscow, so it is obvious he was sacked by Munich because of his connection to Putin.

  • Ernest says:

He is still listed for Don Carlo on 28 or 31 July. Wonder who will sack whom then …

  • Rich C. says:

An American football coach once insisted that “I wasn’t fired, I relieved myself”

  • A Guest says:

Is he really singing in Moscow now? According to his Instagram, he’s taking the rest of July off.
