Jurowskis conduct on both sides of the war
NewsVladimir Jurowski, music director of Bavarian State Opera and the Berlin Radio Symphony, has been outspoken in condemning Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.
His younger brother Dmitry (pictured) is music director of two Russian opera houses, in Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk.
War always divides families, this Ukraine war more than most.

Well, they both want to keep their respective positions. So one condemned the war and the other didn’t. Il ne faut pas chercher midi à quatorze heures.

The Jurowski family is Jewish and Vladimir has often talked about his ancestry growing up and how that intersects with his music making. I don’t know if his brother feels the same way.
He’d be a great pick for the various major US orchestras that have upcoming vacancies.
He was very good when guest-conducting Philly years ago.
Not so sure Vladimir would be a good match for the plutocratic US orchestra landscape. He doesn’t come across as being after money, and he seems quite intellectual, so what could he get in the US, that he doesn’t get much more satisfyingly in Europe?
As I recall, last time he was being seriously considered for Philadelphia, he was unwilling to move his family from Europe to the States.
Understandably and entirely our loss.
How do we know they are divided? Or are we just drowning ourselves in clichées again? They might be the best friends for all we know.
