Tip a hat to the Scarborough Spa Orchestra, the last of its kind.

It has been running for 111 years, playing to audiences in deckchairs.

Oh, I do like to be beside the seadside.

    Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme…

  • Gavin M says:

Indeed a musical gem in the North of England. Worryingly, their season this summer has been much reduced, not starting until the end of July rather than early June as in previous years. Hopefully not a portent of doom!

    • Terry Woodhouse says:

The number of Concerts and length of the season has been reduced in recent years. I used to come at the beginning June and end September but now only once. Maybe it’s about expense but Scarborough should be proud of this wonderful little Orchestra

  • Judith Belton says:

Scarborough is blessed with not one but two great orchestras. Scarborough Symphony Orchestra performs throughout the year. Among the best amateur orchestras in the country, its innovative programming includes, for example, UK premières of William Grant Still symphonies and other rarely heard works, along with standard symphonic repertoire.

Come and listen – next concert.

Memories for some no doubt of the violin virtuoso/ conductor Max Jaffa and his wife the contralto Jean Grayston. They made a great contribution to music making by the sea every summer.
