Doris Stockhausen died yesterday in her hundredth year.

Four years older than her husband and his earliest inspiration, she went against her wealthy Hamburg family and converted to Catholicism to marry him in December 1951. Soon, they had four children.

When Stockhausen fell in love in 1957nwith the artist Mary Bauermeister, Doris agreed to have her live with their family. She finally divorced Stockhausen in 1965 but remained on friendly terms.

Doris is the dedicatee of his breakthrough work, Gesang der Jünglinge.
Mary died earlier this year, aged 88.

  • william osborne says:

Stockhausen dedicated 10 works to Doris, 9 between 1950 – 1955 and one in 1976. Gesang der Jünglinge still remains perhaps the greatest electronic composition ever written.

May she rest in peace but what I need to know is what is that car shown in the background of that black and white photograph??

  • Guest Conductor says:

Thanks! It looks a little futuristic in that photo. Those never made it stateside which explains why I was unfamiliar with them.

  • Jan Kaznowski says:

Doris was also dedicatee of two other early masterpieces : Kontra-punkte and Klavierstuck III
