The University of Music in Graz, Austria, has expressed shock and distress at the death of Stacey Bartsch, its associate Professor for piano accompaniment. No cause it yet known.

Here’s the statement:
Two days ago we received the deeply shocking news that our friend and colleague, Stacey Bartsch, has closed her eyes forever after a long and bravely endured illness.
Institute 7 has lost not only our deputy director, a highly competent pedagogue, and an inspiring artist, we also lost a wonderful colleague whose warmth, humor and empathy greatly enriched our everyday life. Her sense of justice and her clear analytical mind shaped our discussions. Her unshakable optimism and her ability to see the positive side of things even in the most adverse circumstances will continue to be a shining example for us in the days to come.
With Stacey’s passing, the students have lost an excellent teacher who taught with passion and advocated tirelessly for their interests and concerns. Even in her last weeks and days, it was her heartfelt concern that her students continue to receive optimal care.
As deputy director of the institute, Stacey focused on the big picture and was equally dedicated to the intricacies of administration. With her admirable discipline, she sought until the end to complete the tasks entrusted to her with her characteristic perfectionism. Even while on sick leave, she continued to fine tune perfect formulations and logical explanations all the while wanting to stay informed. She never complained about the hardships of her serious illness, but remained full of courage and bravery.
The university was a significant part in Stacey’s life. It is difficult for us to imagine everyday life at the institute without her. In the more than 20 years of her activity at the University of Art, Stacey was tirelessly and unselfishly involved in countless projects, commissions, and events. Nothing was too much for her: that’s how we knew her. In the future, it will be especially important to further shape and develop the institute in Stacey’s spirit. Her humanity and warmth will accompany us. This way we will continue to cherish her in our memory.
Our thoughts are with Stacey’s family, especially her husband Federico and her daughter Matilda.
In deep sorrow,
On behalf of the entire institute: Joseph Breinl and Ulf Bästlein

    This is simply shocking.

  • Prof. Stefan Ammer says:

I heared about Stacey’s passing from our daughter, who is in touch with Stacey’s sister Kylee. It was shocking news; I remember her wonderful hospitality during my visit to Granz as a member of the Scriabin team. She helped me tiresly with organizing our concert. Stacey was my student at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide and I admired her as a musician and as a very special, and always positive young women. Nature can very very cruel, and I am deeply saddened about her passing.
