The city’s Culture Senator Joe Chialo will unveil on Monday a plaque on a house in Ludwigkirchstraße, Wilmersdorf, where the former Philharmonic chief conductor lived until 2001.

Chiallo, who is new to the job, is quickly mastering classical priorities.

    “It’s about preserving the house in its excellence and tradition and still opening doors for a modern future.” For Chialo it is clear: “If I have an equal excellence with two candidates, I would always prefer a woman. And if we could find a woman with a migration background, then of course it would be even better.”

    Middle aged white men with 30 years experience need not apply.

    I have wonderful memories of seeing Abbado and the BPO together on tour at Carnegie Hall. They were great together.

    The Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion commemorates the pianist and conductor Claudio Abbado (1933-2014) with a Berlin commemorative plaque. The long-time chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic lived until 2001 on Ludwigkirchstraße in Wilmersdorf.
