New Grove’s Russian expert has died, at 82
RIPThe death has been announced in St Petersburg of Lyudmila Grigorievna Kovnatskaya, consultant on Russian music for The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians since 2001.
In Russia, she was considered an authority on English music, publishing an important monograph on Benjamin Britten and a book, ‘English Music in the 20th Century: Sources and periods of development’ and being involved in organising festivals of British music.
Her last major work was a three volume study, Shostakovich at the Leningrad Conservatoire.
