Milwaukee nabs concertmaster from Westphalia
NewsThe Milwaukee Symphony, which has been leaderless since Frank Almond laid down his bow in 2020, has finally named his successor as concertmaster.
The new #1 is Jinwoo Lee, first concertmaster of the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen in Germany.
Music director Ken-David Masur said: ‘what has impressed me the most, perhaps, is his great humility and curiosity in service to the music, a quality that both the MSO musicians and I share and respect deeply, and that I know will enrich our work together in this new artistic chapter.’
Ilana Setapen, who has been acting concertmaster for the past three years, reverts to her previous title of associate concertmaster.
An outstanding choice. Milwaukee is fortunate to get him!
He appears to be young too. Note that Ken David Masur is half Japanese.
This is a very good orchestra that has just gotten better.
Good to read! He’ll be leading a very fine section, in my opinion. Mrs. Setapen is a fine violinist herself and I would’ve been neither surprised nor disappointed if she had gotten the role.
