The veteran conductor Hebert Blomstedt, on tour with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, takes a keen interest in heavy metal.

He is conducting the COE in Cologne tonight and Dortmund tomorrow, followed by Luxembourg and Dresden.

The programme is Berwald’s 4th symphony and Mendelssohn’s third.

  • Paul Joschak says:

Well, as another not quite so long-lived conductor said: “Retirement is all very well, so long as it doesn’t get in the way of ones work”. (Bernard Haitink).

  • Max Raimi says:

An enormously appealing human being and a superb musician.

    • Bigfoot says:

One wonders what sort of angry curmudgeon would give Max’s comment a thumbs down.

I’ve sadly not heard Blomstedt live in more than 35 years (San Francisco, with Ida Haendel playing Sibelius), but to watch him in action on numerous recent concert broadcasts is to witness pure joy, from all parts of the concert hall. I’d give my left arm to hear him lead Bruckner 8 before I leave this earth.

  • Henry williams says:

Amazing at his age. Iam much younger than him.
It takes me 10 minutes to open my wallet.

    • Derek H says:

We should raise a toast to his good health.

See you in the bar in 10 minutes! 🙂

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

I have a friend who is 95; a retired professor of Engineering. He’s still the sharpest tool in the shed.

      • Henry williams says:

Reminds me of the 90 year old man that
Went to the Doctor. And asked him is it okay
To get married. The Doctor said you are 90
Why do you wish to get married. The man
Replied that my parents keep nagging me.

  • Jon H says:

    Sarah Willis – I think someone’s up for a horn challenge…

  • william osborne says:

Holding Helen Vollam’s alto trombone I’m guessing.

    • Nicholas Eastop says:

Håkan Björkman’s alto! Håkan is holding my instrument, and I took the photo!
      Nicholas Eastop.

  • Pedro says:

Isn’t he 96? He was born in 1927.

  • Robert Holmén says:

What was the occasion for posing with trombones?
