Rotterdam mourns its American deputy concertmaster
RIPMessage from the Rotterdam Philharmonic:
Our talented, wise, sweet, dedicated former colleague John Helstone passed away last week Thursday. For thirty years he was deputy concertmaster of our orchestra. John had already made a name in the Dutch music world at a young age and then moved to the United States. When our orchestra toured there in 1975, it held a rehearsal in Harrisburg, in which John participated. He got hired, making us a world class violinist and great colleague richer. The fact that we will now have to miss him for good is an unreal idea. We cherish the beautiful memories of him and wish his loved ones a lot of strength during this loss.
Helstone was 78.
More here.
I was not familiar with this artist but a brief search found very good Bartok and Kreisler on YouTube, among other things.

Quite an elegant (and enviable) violin posture!
