Far from being a haven of calm and contemplation, Wells Cathedral is turning into the Khartoum of Anglican worship.

In January, the Dean had to resign amid allegations that he fostered a ‘culture of fear’. The director of music left amid unhappiness and fear.

Now, the exemplary Acting Director of Music Alexander Hamilton has been denied a place on the shortlist for the permanent post.

One of  the Lay Clerks is circulating an email*  demanding that Hamilton is reinstated.

It’s all kicking off again at Wells and we at slippedisc.com are not surprised.

Wells Cathedral  School  is the only place we have  ever been  deplatformed.

UPDATE: We now understand that the email originated with a long-standing supporter of the cathedral and was circulated by many others.

RESURRECTION: Latest news here.

  • Zelda Macnamara says:

Unless people are actually being slaughtered indiscriminately, it’s somewhat exaggerated to compare it to Khartoum – and insulting to all those dying in Sudan at the moment.

  • Peter Davis says:

Why were you deplatformed? I thought that the Head Master was a musician.

  • Anthony says:

It seems as though Dean John Davies may have been the scapegoat. Perhaps the Social Care Institute for Excellence should make another visit to take a closer look at the rest of the senior staff.

We need a twenty-first century Trollope.

I was at the Cathedral School years ago and I have great reservations about what it has become now.

I have always maintained after some experience in these matters, that the last place on earth you will find Christianity is in a church, and that the last place in a church you will find Christianity is in the choir …

    • Hmus says:

As a long term paid chorister I can affirm that. The reason is simple – it’s the old saying “no man is a hero to his valet.” This applies not only to the choir’s opinion of the various Divines in the church heirarchy, but often eventually to the Diety itself…

  • Hacomblen says:

Perhaps they realised that an experienced pair of hands might be better than a second embryo on the trot.

    • Barbara Hammond says:

Not unreasonable, in the circumstances, but did they make their thinking clear to all concerned, or allow damaging speculation like that above to flourish?

  • Kimberley says:

Infighting in church is what satan wants…and the members and leaders are playing right into satans plans .get rid of the antichrist in your church.. pray pray pray.
