For those with a literal turn of mind, Danielle DeNiese has withdrawn from Glyndebourne to sing in a Lloyd Webber show. Her replacement as Blanche is Sally Matthews.

Really. It’s not April Fool’s Day. Well, I think Anna would be a perfect Blanche…’the quest for the heroic’…always delusional…and meets with the guillotine

  • Andy says:

It’s “de Niese”. How is that you still can’t write her name correctly?

  • EWM says:

    Sally Matthews is wonderful!

Since Slipped Disc can’t resist using Anna Netrebko as click bait, I will continue your comparison of Anna to Blanche in Dialogue of the Carmelites. I don’t think Anna Netrebko was ever shy and timid, but she has been harassed by an angry mob and threatened with the loss of her career and livelihood. Fortunately, the American Guild of Musical Artists represented Anna and the arbitrator decided the Met owes her $200,000 as she emerges the hero for defending free speech. Therefore, she avoids the guillotine that made Blanche a martyr. Several concerts and operas at La Scala, plus previously postponed operas in Salzburg and Zurich, are scheduled for 2023 and 2024.

    • Helmut Camillo Fischer says:

Funnily enough, Anna Netrebko was fired from the Met and Munich NOT for her exercising her right to free speech, but for her right to (initially) remain silent.

Firing someone for refusing to give a predicated political statement – it can’t get much more fascist than that.

A long-standing practice in the USA that was especially notable during the McCarthy era.

(And no, to offer my obligatory statement, this isn’t to say I support Putin who is a fool and a war criminal.)
