English National opera embraces Eurovision
NewsENO’s outgoing boss Stuart Murphy says it is ‘likely’ his company’s opera singers will appear with Eurovision contestants.
He added: ‘ENO is all about getting out there, not having it in the theatre, not … to a kind of traditional opera audience but getting it out to everyone.’
ENO Does Eurovision, which sees opera singers perform Eurovision hits with past winners, is one of 24 commissions, most of them collaborations between UK and Ukrainian artists.
That’s great news. Within a year or two the Eurovision contests will be won by candidates submitting operas, oratorios or cantatas.
Opera singers have taken part in the contest before , notably Ingvar Wixell sang the Swedish entry. Tenor Kenneth Mckellar once sang the UK entry wearing a rather smart kilt. Mario del Monaco one of the great dramatic tenors provided Neopolitan songs as an interval act. I am sure there have been others.
Sounds like an entertaining project at the ENO.
You should have given a link to the rest of the article and Murphy’s ramblings. Why, oh why is this man still the voice of ENO? All he is interested in is self-promotion – he barely ever specifically talks about productions because after nearly 5 yrs he still knows nothing, cares little for it and certainly hasn’t created any worthy vision for the ENO! It’s all gimmicks and about celebrities!
