200 unheard songs by Donizetti?
UncategorizedOpera Rara plans to record them.
A strong focus on the music of Donizetti marks the 225th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Tenor Laurence Brownlee, baritone Etienne Dupuis and Opera Rara Artistic Ambassadors, Ermonela Jaho and Michael Spyres, join Opera Rara Artistic Director Carlo Rizzi to headline the Donizetti Song Project (beginning September 2023), which over three years will feature performances at London’s Wigmore Hall, and recordings of almost 200 of the composer’s songs, many to be heard for the first time. A concert performance and recording of L’esule di Roma marks the completion of Opera Rara’s 27th Donizetti revival (11 May 2023, Cadogan Hall, London).
One can’t speak too highly of Opera Rara’s fine recordings of works which are lesser known or have never been recorded before. Too many to name individually but all are worth every pound, dollar or Euro. They own music’s niche they’re in.
Yes! Opera Rara and, more recently, Bru Zane. Both invaluable.
And not one Italianate voice involved in the project. Tsk tsk tsk.
Very excited about this. The world can never have enough Donizetti.
And a first performance of his Dalinda –

I believe it’s the music of Lucrezia Borgia fitted to another libretto in order to appease the Neapolitan censors of 1838.
What do Lucia di Lammermoor and Donizetti have in common?
They both went mad. Donizetti ended up in a Mental asylum in Bergamo, with tertiary syphilis.
