Did Arts Council England topple Chi-chi Nwanoku?

We are hearing suggestions that the removal of the Chineke founder from the running of her diversity orchestra Chineke! came as a condition of the Arts Council providing substantial funding and portfolio status for the organisation.

No newspaper has yet reported the change of governance at Chineke!, which slippedisc.com broke exclusively yesterday. But reports have circulated in two mass-market tabloids in recent weeks of bullying allegations at the organisation. These have proved an embarrassment to the funding bodies. Hence the sudden appointment of a new safeguarding governor, along with other measures.

  • Florian Delco says:

Older readers may remember her namesake, Chi-Chi, a giant panda at the London Zoo who is now stuffed and on display in a glass cage at the Natural History Museum.

  • Pat says:

It is still the UK’s only racist orchestra.(whites need not apply)

    • Dmoney says:

Have you ever seen a chineke concert?
There are people of all races and combinations.
Your comment is demonstrably and spectacularly untrue, will you accept this and delete or admit you are wrong?

      • pat says:

No because whites can’t audition for a position in the orchestra, they are “invited” to fill the gaps when darker skins are not available.

    • Michael says:

If you ever bothered to watch a concert you would see that the ‘diversity’ includes lots of different culture’s including white people (that’s what you getting at)..

    • Breve says:

No, no, no, no, no Pat. Only whitey is racist. Stands to reason.

…. if the conductors allegation is of being undermined in front of the orchestra and Chi-Chi remains as artistic director (91k) how has anything been solved?

    • Pat says:

      Wow!
They had to introduce a safeguarding role to protect workers against the ingrained behaviour of the artistic director?
Wouldn’t it have been better to give Britten Sinfonia and Glynbourne Touring the funds?

  • Herbie G says:

Did the Arts Council topple her? I think it’s more like a DIY job.

  • Jan Kaznowski says:

maybe the orchestra can restart playing the National Anthem now ?

  • sonicsinfonia says:

But she hasn’t been ‘toppled’ or ‘stepped aside’. She has just changed her job description. Her presence and influence is still in place. This is still a discriminatory organisation.

  • Roboeman says:

Bullying ? Surely not ! – Ask any member of any orchestra she’s been involved in over the last 40 years.

  • Anti-bullying cyber warrior says:

She has admitted to the bullying now and there’s an ongoing investigation by the Charity Commission apparently (a UK Government body). She should be stepping down from all roles. She will still be influencing decisions as the AD? Isn’t that just putting more people at risk?

  • IC225 says:

If the ACE is indeed responsible, it’s the one beneficial thing they’ve done for British music lately.
