Death of a Pulitzer winning composer
RIPThe Amherst College professor and prolific composer Lewis Spratlan died on February 9 at the age of 82.
He won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his opera, Life is a Dream.
The was finally staged in Santa Fe in 2016.
Spratlan’s Life is a Dream was premiered at Santa Fe in 2010 some 35 years after it was written. I sang the King. A concert version of Act 2 only of the 3 act opera was done in 2000 at Amherst and Harvard and subsequently awarded the Pulitzer. It took 10 more years for a full perfomance.
Academic. Secure position. Lotsa pages. Must be better than it sounds.
I’m currently listening to an album of his music performed by Ensemble Sequitur and I am enjoying it. Fairly dissonant (but not unpleasant) and rhythmically interesting stuff.
