It has that Mid-Century Space-Age in Southern California look to it. I like it. Better looking than the Met’s Vegas with the Rat Pack production.
At least the MET’s Michael Mayer Vegas RIGOLETTO had a theme that did parallel the original. It is not unlikely that a casino owner/singer (Duke) would have an assortment around him like the courtiers in a traditional production including a clown like Rigoletto. These set designs are like the ‘New’ Bayreuth that opened in 1951. A set design so generic it could mean anything and function for several different operas.
Of course, if Mayer sets 16th century Mantua in Vegas, where will he set traditional ancient pharaoh led Egypt for the MET’s new AIDA? ‘Oh patria, quanto mi costi’ indeed!
I can’t imagine how this space-age futurism would be able to illuminate the story and setting of the Rigoletto story of Renaissance Mantua/Paris. People on these sets don’t have problems, don’t have to worry about money or kidnapping. The most they would have to worry about is when to schedule their next plastic surgery.
Now WHY are opera houses half-empty?
Beautiful, made very well. This could display the ‚inner drama‘, similar to Neo-Bayreuth in the 50‘s, also reminiscening Berlin Theater in the 20‘s. The colors could enhance the mood of the respective scenes too. Let‘s see.
