It’s not just Gavin Bryars, whose parents gave him the initials GB on this day in 1943.

The other composer turning 80 today is the ultra-modernist, Bryan Ferneyhough, maestro of the new Complexity movement.

I thought I hear a wrong note by the 2nd violin in de 13th bar, am i correct? 🙂

  • Rene says:

We know Stockhausen actually heard mistakes. Anyone familiar with Mr Ferneyhoughs ears? For me the commitment and intensity requested by these scores were sufficient for a breathtaking podium-experience

Here’s the 2nd Sting Quartet with the addition of John Trovolta and the Joker. An amusing juxtaposition : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux7i45GXgws&t=134s
I first encountered this searingly intense piece ( it’s very romantic in a way) as a teenager and I’d place it in Ferneyhough’s top 10.

  • Ricardo says:

I have this ambition to, one day – when I’m rich – buy all of Ferneyhough’s scores and use them as wallpaper.
