There is widespread regret as the passing of Irene Schulte-Hillen, who died in Hamburg on Thursday, aged 74, after a severe illness.

In 1992 Irene founded the German Musical Instrument Fund in 1992, which has loaded more than 250 pedigree stringed instruments to talented young musicians.

She was also a mentor to, among others, Igor Levit, Cornelius Meister, Nicolas Altstaedt, Veronika Eberle and Viviane Hagner.

    May she Rest In Peace.
Perhaps her organization could now do more to publicly recognize that many of the finest instruments in the collection were likely confiscated from their Jewish owners during Nazi times.
