Moscow’s Bolshoi’s Theatre has revised its schedule for the first half of 2023 due to a ‘change of teams, artists, repertoire,’ resulting from the non-availability of international talent.

Verdi’s Ernani and Giordano’s Il Re have been added to the season. il Trovatore will be performed concertante only. A series of concerts are planned in April to mark the Rachmaninov anniversary. A ballet of Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame has been postponed.

With all the complaints about the politics of boycotting Russian artists and composers, how many American operas are being performed in Russia these days? (Or ever?) Serious question.

    • Franzen says:

The most Russian operas being performed abroad are from 19th/first half of 20th centuries. How many American operas from that time period exist and being performed anywhere at all? Serious question.

Is “Nixon in China” popular in Russia? “Porgy and Bess” is classified as an opera.
