The Formosa Quartet, founded 20 years ago by musicians of Taiwanese origin, has made its first change of personnel.

Violist Cheyen Chen is stepping down, to be replaced by the Ukrainian-American Matthew Cohen.

That makes them 25% diverse.

This is not their first change of members! Brian was a founding member, so that is a big deal. He is also one of the best violists in the country, so those are big shoes to fill. Good luck to the quartet and its’ newest member!!!

    Dear Norman,

After seeing your post on Slipped Disc about the Formosa Quartet’s new violist appointment, we felt obliged to set the record straight on a few things. Our new violist, Matthew Cohen, is Ukrainian-American, not Ukraine-born, nor is he the first personnel change in the group. Also, the quartet members today are Taiwanese-American, Chinese-American, Korean-American, and Ukrainian-American, giving a shade more diversity than 25% although we personally don’t consider such statistics an integral part of our artistry.

    Regards,
    The Formosa Quartet
