Message from Staatsoper under den Linden:

We are very happy to announce that Daniel Barenboim will conduct the New Year’s concerts, which will take place at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden on December 31, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. and January 1, 2023 at 4:00 p.m.

The programme includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, op. 125, performed by the Staatskapelle Berlin and featuring soloists such as Camilla Nylund (soprano), Marina Prudenskaya (alto) and René Pape (bass).

This is outstandingly good news.

You will note that they have yet to book a tenor.

  • Norman Krieger says:

    Wonderful news!

  • Greg Bottini says:

That’s a pretty demanding work to rehearse and perform. I hope DB is physically up to it.

  • Una says:

    God bless him!

  • Emil says:

According to Operabase the tenor should have been Michael Spyres. No idea why or when he withdrew.

  • Gustavo says:

    Oh joy.

  • Shirley says:

    Michael Spyres had been listed.

  • Alphonse says:

A completely non-musical observation: Barenboim’s might be the most gradual and slow-moving case of male pattern baldness I’ve ever seen in my life. Most men who are destined to be completely bald complete the process by middle age. Barenboim had a rather glorious head of hair as a young man- and until not too long ago he still had some coverage on top. Alas, no more.

  • Gabriel Parra Blessing says:

Outstandingly good news, indeed. One wonders whether the interpretation will strike a valedictory tone or one of defiance. Hope the concert is made available in some form online.

  • Dame Anne Evans says:

In these gloomy times this is the best bit of news I’ve heard all year.

  • Monika Strugała says:

Great news!Thank you! Bravo Maestro !

Why can’t he just retire? High age, bad health and still not beeing able to pass on the baton to the next generation?? His Account would most surely allow that (except, he put all his savings into stock share of crypto companies..)

  • Estelle Neethling says:

This must be wonderful news for every person who is able to be attend this wonderful yearly concert. I hope, here in faraway South Africa, we will not have to wait too long to experience the inimitable Maestro Barenboim conducting this beautiful programme online.

  • Nicholas says:

I pray this is not his swan song. Viva Barenboim!

  • harry Collier says:

Barenboim can never pass up a chance to acquire yet more money. My memories go back to the Paris Opera many years ago where it was reported that they would not renew his contract because he was asking for 1 million dollars a year. And that was decades ago. But I agree that, whatever his merits or not as a pianist or conductor, he is a first class salesman.

    • Luca says:

Barenboim never took up his post at the Paris Opéra because of a disagreement with the Director over the choice of operas (not enough French). He was paid a million francs in compensation.

  • Grabenassel says:

Hooray! Finally another Beethoven 9th for the New Year concert!
