Mirga magic makes Munich think
NewsThe Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražynte-Tyla woke up today as a candidate for music director of the Munich Philharmonic, a post vacated by Valery Gergiev when his ally Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine.
Mirga has received strong reviews for a performance of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s third symphony, currently her trademark piece, along with an impressive account of the Schumann piano concerto with Igor Levit.
Although Mirga has said she is not in the market for another chief conductor’s job while her children are small, Munich is not much more than an hour away from her home in Salzburg. She has become, like it or not, a candidate for the Philharmonic.
UPDATE: She has been booked to conduct Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony with the Munich Philharmonic and Chorus at next year’s Berlin Festival on 12 September.
God forbid!
Blonde crushes die hard.
Mirga still needs the VPO blessing.
If it weren’t for the Bambergers in the same Bundesland, I would see Hrusa.
Or maybe Andris Nelsons who may be tired of commuting between Boston and Leipzig?
So, they’re going from one overrated conductor to another. I see.
Thanks for your comment – Prof. Dr. Alleswisser…
It must be helpful to have as a signature piece a work that I’d wager 99% of the public has never heard and no one else has opted to champion. As for her performances of the rest of the classical repertoire I’ve yet to be convinced that the opportunities afforded her to conduct great orchestras are warranted.
Sorry, this is wishful thinking……I can´t say more here, but this has nothing to do with the reality….Speaking of female conductors, why don´t you cover really valuable evnts, like Karina Cannelakis´incredible performance of Jörg Widmann´s mind blowing Arche in Amsterdam(it´s on youtube)….She really ticks all the boxes, delivers always fresh, profound, comitted performances( her recent Bruckner 9 was the best i heard in 55 years)….And she gets the big gigs now in a row now, a well deserved reward for her talent, dedication, and hard work. And yes,she also is a mother of a small child……She really is a serious performer.
Nice try to be a spin doc, but I doubt she is ready for that. And neither is Munich Phil ready to consider her worthy. You just like her.
The Munich chief conductors of the last 50 years:
Kempe
Celibidache
Levine
Thielemann
Maazel
Gergiev
All seasoned conductors at the time of their appointment with the Munich Philharmonic.
I have always admired and supported Mirga however she left us in Birmingham to concentrate on her music rather than the admin work that a music director is responsible for. I shall certainly be disappointed if she has abandoned the UK for a similar post in Germany
