We have just been told that Joshua Winograde, Senior Director of Artistic Programs at LA Opera, is joining Rice’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston as Professor of Opera and Director of Opera Studies.

Winograde was in charge of mainstage casting and artistic administration at LA Opera, as well as the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program. LA Opera feel so badly about his move that they have already erased him from their website.

Shepherd School Dean Matthew Loden said he ‘couldn’t be more thrilled’ to recruit Winograde. ‘He is a driving force and visionary leader in the opera world, and a champion of developing the vocal stars of tomorrow,’ said Loden.

Fabulous coup for Houston but that really is a shame for both LA and indeed the performing industry. One of the good guys and knew his stuff!

Not accurate: “LA Opera feel so badly about his move that they have already erased him from their website.” I searched and found lots of mentions.

Good for Josh! His two young sons will love the Houston schools and he will be able to develop young singers with good techniques. As someone wrote above, Josh is one of the good guys. I’m quite sure there isn’t any ill-feeling from LA Opera.

    Auguri!

This is a big loss for LA Opera. I’m still reeling from the resignation of the invaluable Grant Gershon from his post as chorus master/resident conductor.

The Shepherd School has a great opera program plus a brand new opera house.
