Janos Gereben on San Francisco Classical Voice has a fine tribute to voice guru César Ulloa, who has reached 70.

Ulloa is chair of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Voice Department. They call him the Voice Whisperer.

His devoted students have included Julie Adams, Angel Blue, Amina Edris, David Lomelí, Daniela Mack, Pene Pati, Eleazar Rodríguez, Nadine Sierra, Efraín Solís and Robert Watson.

Cesar was put in the beneficial position of being the only decent teacher in San Francisco that the opera allowed their young artists to use outside of former director Sheri Greenawald. Sheri routinely wrecked voices with her aggressive technique (which also shortened her own career) and Cesar helped them develop in a healthy way. He’s not a superstar teacher, but he had outstanding talent that he didn’t ruin as they developed.
