Message from Min Kwon, in New Jersey:

You know you are in good hands when your page turner appears in perfectly coordinated attire to your concert! 😍👯‍♀️ And the most amazing thing is we didn’t even talk about what to wear! Thanks dear Jana Křupková. I had SO many notes to play in this big 2-hr program and you had so many pages to turn!

Reminds me immediately of one of the best skits on “I Love Lucy” television, when ‘Lucy and Ethel’ wore the same dress on a show and sang, ‘Friendship’, as they slowly tore off the pieces to each other’s dress out of anger for wearing the same one! Classic!! I hope these two get along better!

I believe that Heifetz showed up wearing the same tuxedo as Fritz Reiner at least once or twice. I think the orchestra members were wearing the same tuxedo as well. Somehow it never made the news…

The newly elected socialist Brazilian government may ban pernambuco use and export, not unlike as is the case already with ivory; this is a type of wood widely used for bows for string instruments for centuries, and its ban will mean untold problems for string players worldwide, not to mention that the new stocks of the material widely thought ideal for bows will no longer be available, possibly ever. (While numbers of elephants worldwide have risen significantly since the ban, all sale of ivory remains restricted.)

I am wondering why this very practical and monumental problem facing musicians worldwide isn’t getting more attention on this site. In terms of international travel, making of new bows, etc etc. Oh right, ladies’ outfits. Oh wait, what did Yuja wear last?

I think it reflects the level of desperation in this industry. There are artists out there who have a very hard time facing reality (that the masses really aren’t interested in what they are doing and never will be), so the real motive is to get the spotlight using non-musical means. Although there are top soloists that deserve the careers that they have, I think this industry is broken in the sense that it has turned into a social media competition among musicians. We would like to think that the quality of the music found in the videos that they upload to YouTube, Instagram, etc. is what is leading to “likes” and more subscribers, but many times that’s not the case. Many have turned into entertainers who use various means to gain popularity. It means that those people have a much better chance at succeeding than a very gifted musician who has a personality very fitting for cringe.com.

Of course the pernambuco issue deserves to be discussed here and elsewhere! It has been on the cards since 2010 or earlier I believe. But there’s nothing wrong with having some ”light news” *as well* in these challenging times.
